West coast of South Island E-mail

Franz Josef glacier

We stayed 2 days in Franz Josef while the rain was pouring down (apparently very normal for the west coast).

I wanted to do a heli hike (helicopter to the glacier and then a short guided walk), but the weather did unfortunately not permit this, so I just walked up to the glacier (around 10 km in total) and got the bus back. It was actually the first glacier I've seen, it is quite spectacular, but to walk on it would have been better ... well, we've got glaciers in Norway as well, so I might check them out some day. The rest of the day was spent reading a book with this inquisitive guy on my lap and I felt very relaxed as the others came back from a 6-hour glacier walk with huge blisters and wet cameras. I'm really happy with my waterproof camera!!!

These are the mountains around the Fox glacier close to Franz Josef.

Next stop was Wanaka, a sleepy little town with beautiful lakes and mountain views. A few of us went to a shooting range, which was fun. In true Kiwi fashion the driver played a joke on us saying there were dolphins in the lake that liked bread with peanut butter, so some of us spent 15 minutes freezing and throwing bread into the lake (only for it to be eaten by seagulls, of course) and he got a good laugh.

The rest of the time we just drank beer, played pool and looked around. Although I might be the oldest in the bus, everybody is friendly and we enjoy each other's company now that we have been traveling together for a while. We might even meet up again in other places in New Zealand or the rest of the world! Facebook makes it easy to keep in touch.
