After leaving Queenstown in the morning I had some beautiful weather as I went further north. I stopped for coffee and took my time to get to Cradle Mountain National park, one of the best-known in Tassie. The park is very well organised and full of information and helpful people. There are walks to suit all schedules and levels of fitness, and I decided to take a few of the shorter ones. The walks are all very well signed, with information about the level of fitness required, time estimates and so on. This guy greeted me at the parking lot. I went for a short walk to a little lake called Wombat Pool, but it should be renamed Wombat Poo, as the cheeky little critters leave their cube-shaped droppings everywhere, but being nocturnal they were hiding from me all the time!
I also went for a short walk named "Enchanted walk", and I could easily see why. The pristine silence, beautiful riverbanks and green moss everywhere made me feel as part of a fairytale (or maybe Lord of the Rings!).
I finally got to spot an echidna, he was walking peacefully across the road, and luckily I spotted him in time not to hit him.
I stopped for the night in Westbury at a dirt cheap campsite called Andy's (mainly cheap because there were no showers I guess), but to my surprise there was free internet in the 24-hour cafe attached!! I spent hours there charging PC, camera, phone and iPod, catching up on Facebook and e-mail and writing a few blog posts. The staff was friendly, the chips portions (aka dinner) were huge and I got my lovely sweet chili sauce as well and thought I'd died and gone to camper heaven (could really use a shower now tough). The next morning I headed off to Launceston ("Lonnie", of course) and visited the excellent Cataract Gorge just 10 minutes' drive from the city center with its beautiful gardens and lots of peacocks walking around! I didn't spend any time in the city, really, and drove straight to the famous east cost for some beach life and sunny weather!
