Sunset on Kuta beach Bali is excellent, fairly easy to get around and everybody speaks English (in one form or another). I wanted to stay where the action is (Kuta beach baby!) and was able to get a decent(ish) cheap hotel right off the popular Poppies Lane. I spent a lovely hour on the beach (only to discover I got sunburnt earlier that day), but the waves were a little high for me (managed to cool myself down though - lovely cold water!). I was browsing the shops and restaurants when there was a power outage (very common it seems) and then a fire due to an emergency generator. As the power didn't seemt to be coming back any time soon, I ate in the dark and ordered a 3-day tour to the paradise of Gili Islands. I was able to bargain 25 % off the price for transport to about 70 euros and the next morning I was on my way. The 2-hour fast boatride was fine, but getting cheap accomodation wasn't as easy as the travel agent promised (or guaranteed, actually), so I ended up paying 11 euro per night for my own bungalow (more than 3 times the price in Kuta). The owner is super friendly and helpful and the beach is very close, so I hope my budget survives the splurge!
Beach on Gili Trewangan In the evening I wanted to check my email, but surprise, surprise, another power outage cut my Internet time short, but I got what I came for, namely news that my very first nephew was born that morning. Can't wait to see him when I'm back in February! I wanted to get a beer to celebrate, but it was just too hot for alcohol, so I got the tastiest fish burger I ever had (can't go wrong with tuna) and went to bed. After chasing a cockroach off it I decided not to leave so much stuff on it for them to hide under and use the mozzie net. I sprayed thoroughly under the bed so I hope I killed it ... The worst thing about them is that they are so damned fast! Plus, they survive anything. My spray is almost finished, and getting a new one on Gili is not going to happen, as everything is ridiculously expensive - they charge almost 8 euro for the smallest sun tan lotion bottle I have ever seen! Hope mine lasts until I'm back at Kuta. Apparently the lack of transport is the reason why everything is so expensive. Oh well. So the next morning at breakfast I started talking to a guy who turned out to be a Norwegian. We later had lunch with the Danish girl he was traveling with and a Swedish diving instructor we met in the restaurant ... Small worl, we thought, and then 6 Finnish guys sat down next to us!
