| Couchsurfers, volcanoes and hot trains in Java |

The big cities in Java are difficult to navigate in, but I was lucky enough to meet a fellow couchsurfer on the train between Yogyakarta and Surabaya. She lives and works in Surabaya with English First and was super friendly and helpful. We went out to eat and she gave me some tips about what to see in Surabaya. I went to the zoo to see the Komodo dragons, which were amazing and huge!
In Yogyakarta, a busy touristy (but great) little city, one of the main attractions is the Buddhist temple of Borobudur. I went there early in the morning and it was really beautiful and tranquil, not crowded at all at 6 am! My entertainment on a Saturday in Yogya was a small gecko trying to eat a cockroach. It was taking the poor gecko too long to eat it (not too sure he would have been able too either), so I had to interrupt ... I sprayed it and asked the hotel manager to take out the loser (cockroach). The little hotel manager was so lovable, tiny, and old, he made excuses about the room, saying it was very simple, very simple, and probably thought I wouldn't want it, but I said it was fine and his smile was so wide I thought his face would crack. It was so sad to picture other tourists saying it wasn't good enough for them ... I took a train to Probolinggo and wanted to get to Gunung Bromo to see the sunrise, which turned out to be a little difficult (but not impossible if you are willing to pay, of course ...). I ended up getting a driver (and a horse for the final 3 km) for around 20 Euro, which isn't bad, I suppose. It was definitely worth it, I cannot describe the feeling of standing on top of a volcano at 5 am, 7 degrees celsius, waiting for the sunrise. Fabulous!
After 2 hours on the train, 2 hours of waiting in the train station, 1 hour drive, 3 km walk / horseback ride in complete darkness, I climbed the 250 steps to the top while sulfuric fumes burnt my eyes and throat. This is the view from the top.
The neighbouring mountain.
View of Bromo from 3 km away.
