Final days in India E-mail

Monkeys at railway station

These 2 weeks have gone so fast, feels like a life age ago that I stood nervous on the airport looking for an ATM ... The last days I spent in Ooty were unfortunately very rainy, but I did enjoy it immensely. The ride up to the mountains was spectacular, a little crowded though.

I shared the smallest carriage ever with a family of 6 as well as 2 French tourists with backpacks the size of my own. The Indian family was probably very rich, there was a man with his 3 sons (bet he was content!), his wife and mother. The boys were all students or in secondary school, wore Western clothes, had a new digital camera each and an iPod, the father had a digital video camera and the men all spoke English well and told us that their driver went ahead to get them hotel rooms. The French tourists' English was pretty bad, but I think they enjoyed themselves nonetheless.

We stopped for monkey spotting and refill of snacks, water and coal a few times. The train is driven by a steam engine that actually pushes the train from the back, as the tracks are very steep. The train is very slow, but the views make it all worth it!

In Ooty I went on a little sightseeing tour, I was the only white person there again ... The tour was ok, the guide's English was quite good and we had some nice weather at the beginning of the tour, but then the rain started. The tea plants were beautiful, but it sure was a bumpy ride up there!

Tonight I'll get a sleeper train to Chennai and spend my last rupees there tomorrow before I head to Singapore. There I will have faster connections and will hopefully be able to upload a few videos if I figure out how ... I must say I am looking forward to a shower (not just a bucket wash), spoken English and different food (though Indian food is great), maybe a washing machine and a big, big ice cream!! I'm also hoping the Internet connections are faster there, because I haven't got enough patience for this! How on earth did people make websites 10 years ago???
