Packing light E-mail

Everybody keeps telling you not to bring too much stuff, especially when backpacking for such a long time. There are a few websites dedicated to the art of packing light. Onebag.com gives you some helpful advice regarding items with multiple functions and priorities when packing. It also links to a rather extreme site, but notice that these sites are made by men! Girls need more stuff, especially clothes. We cannot bear the thought of wearing the same outfit day in and day out. The horror! But still, as I grow older it's getting easier to plan and bring less clothes.

My travel stuff stowed away at home

I have read loads about this on the Internet; in forums, travel sites and stores, and I hope I have chosen the solutions that will work best for me. In my quest for the best equipment I have found many strange and/or useless items, but also some very clever ones.

On the other hand, one should not overdo it. I heard a story once about some guys wanting to save space and wrapped a couple of painkillers in tin foil in stead of the original packaging. At the end of the trip the pills were of course completely mashed. They got stopped at a routine customs control at a border crossing and sat for hours in custody while the customs officials tested the suspicious white powder wrapped in tin foil. Imagine the look on the officers' faces when the analysis actually proved it to be painkillers like the travellers claimed!
