Travel towels

Travel towel

A microfiber travel towel is a must these days. Of course, a regular towel is comfy, but takes up a lot of space and does not dry as quickly.
Just fasten it to the outside of your backpack after use, and it's completely dry in a few hours or less. I'm bringing a big one and a small one (thank you Birgitte!).

Laundry on the road

Before I left, I treated all fabrics with an antibacterial fabric protector spray that is said to stay active for around 35 washes. It keeps the clothes from smelling and prevents bacteria build-up. I'm bringing a clothes line and a universal sink plug so I can wash my ultra fast-drying stuff in the hostel room (I'll probably end up sending it all to a little cleaning lady if it's cheap though). Allround soap or regular detergent can be used, or these fabulous laundry soap sheets (thanks to Elin and Torgeir for this tip!).

Silk bed liner and travel pillow

I have a silk bed liner to use in hostels. Sleeping bags are often prohibited (especially in Australia) because of issues with bed bugs. A flat mate brought some of them home once, and they're terrible little buggers that will survive nuclear war together with the cockroaches. I believe they must be frozen for a week or something if you want to kill them. Apparently it's a good idea to spray your bed and its surroundings with insect repellent a couple of hours before you go to bed to prevent those nightly visits. I'm also taking a travel pillow. It's good for sleeping on buses and a good alternative to smelly hostel pillows. Plus I figured it's probably easier to sleep in a different bed every night if I use the same pillow. Just hope I don't forget it like I did in France 8 years ago ... still miss that old pillow!

Ear plugs

I cannot sleep without ear plugs. I'm taking a bunch and will honestly die from lack of sleep if I lose them all. Those orange rocket-shaped ones are the best. The cheap yellow ones are too hard.

To make family and friends extra envious I'm taking a light hammock for some nice beach-palm trees-hammock pictures.

I also found a funny little gadget I'm curious about - a space blanket. Looks like something from the moon landing, but it was cheap and it's very small and light, so I'll give it a go.
