Although I want to travel light, I really, really want to bring a computer. And what gadget would be better than an Acer Aspire One mini PC? It weighs less than 1 kilo and has everything I need - 160 GB harddisk, 1 GB RAM, 3 USB ports, memory card reader, Webcam, wireless Internet and Win XP Home.
I got it redicilously cheap (by Norwegian, and even international standards, I believe - around 220 Euro / 300 USD) on a special offer. I actually bought one just like it a few months ago, but it had Linux. Waaay too difficult to install even the smallest programs. I was, however, able to sell it at almost the price I got it. One of my biggest fears for my trip is that I will get bored. I haven't had this much time off since I was 12 or so. But the PC will keep me occupied, writing blog posts or letters while I'm offline, and surfing the web and posting/uploading photos and posts when I'm online. I found a site with a good overview of free wifi hotspots around the globe, which may be useful.
The baby PC needs, in addition to loads of TLC (it's sooo cute!), accessories like a protective case or tote, a mouse (just using the tiny mouse pad will drive you crazy pretty quickly), security lock, some extra flash memory, maybe a keyboard cover, screen protective film, a car charger and so on. Dealextreme.com has great prices and FREE SHIPPING all over the world. Tons of gadgets you had no idea you wanted. Or needed, for that matter.
Some of my personal favorites:
Skype phone mouse - This is a must! You need a mouse anyway, so why not one that doubles as a phone?
USB fan - I can only imagine that when sitting in front of the tiny screen in very hot weather, you're pretty happy you bought this thing. If nothing else, it's definitely an ice breaker!
Keyboard protection - You cannot sit on the beach pretending to be working without this!
Screen protective film - Protective film like this is a great (and very small) investment for all gadgets with a display of some sort. You can get film for MP3 players, cell phones, laptops and cameras for only a few dollars.
Cell phone charger - why carry the huge charger when you can get this brilliant little thing?
