A contraceptive implant is a tiny hormone emitting stick inserted under your skin by your doctor. It contains more or less the same hormone as the mini-pill, so if you want to see if it could work for you, you should try a couple of months on those first.

The implant cost me about the same as a year's consumption of regular contraception pills, but it lasts for 5 years. Money well spent!

Here's why I chose the implant for travels:

- No need to bring a stack of pills and risk losing them or get customs problems because it's prescription medicine
- I don't have to remember taking the pill every day, which would have been very difficult on the road with no routines
- Dhiorrea or vomiting (impossible to avoid on long term travels) can reduce the effects of the pill (then you have to use other contraceptices and can risk having a period when you weren't expecting one), but this will not effect the implant
- A common effect (roughly 20% experience this) is no periods at all! Another issue for female travellers solved!

Getting it put in was quick and (almost) painless. Just think of all the hassle you'll avoid, and it'll be over in a second! You get a local anaesthetic. You can feel the implant in your arm, but you get used to it quickly. It's a great party trick too that really freaks guys out (dude! Feel my implant!).
